Mental Health Awareness, support & prevention ProGRAM

When it comes to mental health matters, silence and internalized shame can be dangerous.

Our mental health program focus is on creating awareness, understanding, and the acknowledgment of factors affecting the mental well-being of diversity of Canadians, especially Africans/ Black immigrants in Canada.  This program is specifically designed to support African/Black youth and young adults ages 12 and above, and their families.  Using a solution based approach, we offer culturally responsive and affirming mental health support, focusing on healing, anti-oppression, and anti-racism.

We provide a non-clinical culturally appropriate mental health intervention informed by Black/Africentric values and traditions.   We will work with participants 12 years and over and their parents, guardians and other caregivers who are experiencing one or more of the following:

  1. Anxiety, stress, depression, indecision, fear, suicidal tendencies, lack of confidence
  2. Dilemma about future career path, guilt, self-doubt, constantly overwhelmed, angry.
  3. Low self-esteem, lack of motivation, poor time management skills.
  4. Relationship issues, family conflicts, indulging in self-harm.

 We provide confidential services free of charge, to those needing assistance. Services include consultation, referral, groups and workshops, as well as brief, mental health counselling.

  4. Collaboration - Engaging with various stakeholders to share resources necessary to alleviate and/or prevent mental health challenges.
  5. Accessibility and Inclusivity - Ensuring that the program is inclusive of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Activities include;

  1. Having open culturally appropriate workshops, group conversations on mental health in a non judgmental space

 Mental health counsellors are either social workers, psychotherapists, or masters level interns under supervision who provide brief therapy; psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health disorders. Psychiatrists can assess, diagnose, and prescribe medication for specific mental health conditions, but require a general practitioner’s referral.

While our services are open to public, priority is given to Black/African immigrant community members who experience multidimensional mental health related challenges.
